Why should my pet have RABIES, DISTEMPER and BORDATELLA vaccines before seeing the groomer?

Your pet will be going into a closed enviroment, where the air is recirculated. Your pet may come into contact with another pet at some time. Besides, there is over 7 different strands of BORDATELLA (kinda like the flu and cold virus for humans) going around. Myself, as a proffessional groomer, I want to take every precaution I can to ensure your pets health and safety.

How often should my pet see the groomer?

Every week if your pet is allowed to sleep with you and get on the furniture. Every week for FREE nail trimming. Every month if you would like for your pet to look its best at all times, just like you.

Should I brush my pet before it goes to the groomer?

YES. Brushing and combing your pet should be a part of your daily routine. If pet has matts or tangles it will cost you more at the groomer to spend more time on your pet. If your pet is a complete mess then let the groomer take the pet short, it is easier on the pet, the groomer and your wallet.

How often should I wash my pets toys and bedding?

Every time your pet visits the groomer.

My Pet has fleas/ticks, what should I do?

Take pet to your groomer. Fog or spray your house, yard and vehicle. Wait at least 4 hours to open house, then wait at least 1 hour till pets are allowed back inside of house. Apply a topical to pet for any lingering pests (I apply from base of tail to top of head. It distributes more evenly and is less likey to irritate pet and make them shake, which removes some of the topical). Ask your vet about giving something for the itching (flea/tick bites itch just like a misquito bite itches to us). Depending on the severity of the investation this process may need to be repeated weekly (4x). Then reapeated every other week (3x). Then repeated every 3rd week (2x). Then monthly as needed.

Do I need to use a topical on my pet?

Yes, if you are having a pest problem. Not having a problem, do not use. I only use a topical on my pet if I see any fleas or ticks. I treat my house, yard and vehicle every month instead of my pet. Recent studies have shown that the topicals we put on our pets start to desolve acrylic nails, eats thru leather on a sofa, and in some cases it has left a burn mark on some pets. Besides, think back to childhood. Everyone had headlice at one time in their life, at that time we used a headlice shampoo. Do you still use it today as a prevenative?

My pet is matted/tangled, but it is cold outside. Should I have my pet groomed?

Yes, most pets are stritckly indoor pets. Which means that they are only outside for about 5 minutes at a time, they have a body temperature of 102, they will be fine. Or you may purchase a sweater for them if you wish.

When my pet walks it sounds like it is tapping on the floor, Why?

Your pets nails need to be cut. Your pet can recieve a nail cutting every week(WE DO IT FOR FREE). If a pet is making noise as it walks it may also be in pain, think of wearing a pair of shoes that are too small and your nails are too long. Some pets even get very upset when you touch thier feet because of this oversight.

My pets nails are begining to bleed or are still bleeding after having nails cut, What do I do?

Most times owners want the nails as short as possible. When we, as proffessionals, do this it may cause trickle bleeding. Depending on the excitment of the pet or the roughness of surface the pet walks on, the nails may bleed for a short time. You may either bring pet back to the person who cut them, apply baking soda to the bleeding nail with light pressure or let them walk in the dirt.

What if I noticed a nick/cut on my pet after I got it home from the groomer?

Call groomer immediatly! They may not have noticed it. Most cases the groomer will pay for any vet bills associated with that area. Groomers do not nick/cut animals on purpose, accidents do happen. Not all pets are still all of the time, something may have startled the groomer or your pet. If the groomer tells you in advance, then they noticed it before you, and most likely have already gotten treatment for your pet also. Give groomer another chance! Remember, we are here to help make pets look their best, not injure them.

What is clipper burn? Did my groomer cause it?

Clipper burn is from a dull blade, pulling hair and then cutting it. Simillar to us using a dull razor on legs or face, it will itch and we we may make a rash from scratching it. The groomer did not cause it, the blade did. If this happens to your pet, PLEASE tell the groomer so that we may have the blade sharpened and no other pet will get a sore. We as a groomer do not know that our blade is getting dull untill it is too late.

What is a hot spot?

This is a little irritation that flares up. Most times it is very little to begin with, then the pet chews or scrathes it. Then that begins to itch, then the pet scratches or chews more. In comparison, it is like a mosquito bite that continues to itch and ends up like a carpet burn or road rash type of sore. As it heals it ooses, pets lick it to clean it. Then it scabs over to heal, which makes it itch, then the pet chews more. Just a vicious cycle. Ask your vet how to treat it. I use a benadryl cream on my pet when this occurs and an e-collar so that my pet can not lick the site.

Do you tip the groomer? How much?

Yes, The groomer is doing a service for you just like your hairstylist or barber does for you. The amount is up to you, general rule of thumb is 10% of total. Example, Groom is $30 then Tip is $3. Tipping is not required but appreciated.

How can I help my pet to relax about its paws, face, and or tail?

Take pet on a long walk, make sure pet is tired. Then when you get home, spend 5 minutes on each area that your pet gives you trouble with (or the groomer). This must be done each day in order for the pet to realize that it is OK to have these areas touched, brushed, massaged, etc..

Do you work all day?

We offer daycare service at $10. Your dog will get its own blanket, water dish and will go for a walk to stretch its legs. Your cat will get its own litter box, own water dish and own blanket. Either may have the chance to roam shop once all pets are gone.

Keep cat indoors or outdoors, or both?

KEEP CATS INDOORS ONLY! Cars kill millions of cats each year. Outdoor cats are exposed to serious, and often fatal, infectious diseases such as feline leukemia and rabies. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms pose a health threat to your cat. Some of these can be transmitted to humans. Outdoors, cats can be chased by dogs or other cats, and killed, injured, or lost. Cats are often shot at, poisoned, trapped or tortured by neighbors who are annoyed by cats using their gardens as a litter box or hunting grounds. Coyotes, Great-Horned Owls and other wildlife are known to kill and eat cats. Cats that spend much time outdoors require more medical treatment and have a much shorter life span than indoor cats. If you want you cat to experience the outdoors, build an outdoor inclosure for your cat so that he is safe at all times.

Is a pet actually free?

No! Vaccines, spay/nueter, declay (if need), microchip, all will set you back about $500+ depending on your vet. Not to mention food, dishes, collar, leash, bedding, housing (cage, crate, carrier, etc..) litter (if needed) toys and grooming. Check your local animal shelter. It will be cheaper and more informative.

How often should my pet see the vet?

Every year for vaccines and a health check-up. Every dog should get a RABIES, BORDETELLA, and DISTEMPER. Every cat should get a RABIES and DISTEMPER. Even if your pet never goes outside, there is always a chance of escape.

I bathe my pet at home, can I use my shampoo?

Not recommended. Our ph balance is different than our pets ph balance. Check with your vet to see if shampoo is compatible.

What toys are good for a puppy?

For A Happy Puppy, Don't Forget The Toys! For any happy puppy, playtime is essential. But which toys should you get for your dog? Here are some suggestions: Soothing and Chewy toys: To help comfort your puppy, choose a plush cuddly toy. Puppies will often carry these around in their mouths and sleep beside them. For chewing, toys like Puppy Kongs(tm) and Gumabones(tm) are fun, safe choices. Some toys can even serve a dual purpose; for example, a rope bone soaked in water and then frozen makes an excellent teething bone for a small puppy. Interactive toys: Tugs, Frisbees(tm), and other throw toys are excellent interactive toys. A favorite toy can be used to encourage and motivate your puppy to perform many tasks, which makes them great for training. Interactive toys also allow you to build a great relationship with your puppy through play. General play toys: Your puppy will also need toys he can play with in order to amuse himself on his own. Balls and rope toys are excellent choices, and toys with squeakers add to the excitement. Toys that puppies can shake or chase are not only fun, they allow your puppy to act out natural canine behaviors without damaging furnishings or other items-such as your favorite pair of shoes. Always purchase toys with safety in mind. Avoid small parts that puppies can remove through chewing. To keep your puppy interested, rotate his toys frequently, and be sure to replace any toys that become worn or broken. Pet Supermarket has all the toys you'll need for playtime with your puppy-have fun! From Petsupermarket

Does a cats "meow" mean something?

The Language Of Cats As cat owners, we love the companionship and interaction that our cats provide. But have you ever wondered what your cat is trying to "say" to you? Here are some clues: Let's talk: Cats are very vocal and usually communicate by meowing or purring. Meowing can be used as a greeting, to request attention, or sometimes to show pain, depending on the pitch and frequency of the meow. And although purring is usually a sign of happiness, it can sometimes indicate fear or distress. By observing your cat closely, you can learn to tell the difference. Playful behaviors: When cats are happy, they sometimes paw their guardian while purring to show contentment and affection. Don't be alarmed if your cat gives you a light "love bite"-this is a natural sign of feline playfulness. However, hard or aggressive biting can indicate distress, fear, or pain. Tale of the tail: For real clues, watch your cat's tail. A tail that is curved gently downward, and then curved up again at the tip means your cat is relaxed. A friendly, cheerful greeting is being offered when the tail is fully erect and the tip is vertical. Signs of anger are evident if the tail is swishing vigorously from side to side, and your kitty is afraid if the tail is lowered and fluffed out. Keep in mind that any sudden, persistent changes in your cat's behavior could indicate a problem, so watch closely. And remember that the associates at Pet Supermarket can assist you with everything you'll need for a happy, healthy cat. From Petsupermarket

What is the best kind of food for my pet?

Over the years I have found out that most pets are allergic to soy, wheat, corn and dairy. But if you pet has no alleries then any pet food is OK for your pet. I feed my pet NUTRO'S Natural Choice, Lamb Meal & Rice. Remeber to read the ingredient label, if ity does not sound good to you, look it up (at the library-definitions of ingredients) and make sure it is good for your pet, waring it may make you sick from reading it. Example: pig ears are sold at pet stores, they have a disclaimer that reads wash hands well after handling. If we should wash, why are we allowing our pets to chew in it or eat it. Visit http://www.nexusmagazine.com then put pet food in the search area and read the articles for more information. Warning it may make you sick.
