I bathe my pet at home, can I use my shampoo? Not recommended. Our ph balance is different than our pets ph balance. Check with your vet to see if shampoo is compatible.
How often should my pet see the groomer? Every week if your pet is allowed to sleep with you and get on the furniture. Every week for FREE nail trimming. Every month if you would like for your pet to look its best at all times, just like you.
Should I brush my pet before it goes to the groomer? YES. Brushing and combing your pet should be a part of your daily routine. If pet has mats or tangles it will cost you more at the groomer to spend more time on your pet. If your pet is a complete mess then let the groomer take the pet short, it is easier on the pet, the groomer and your wallet.
My pet is matted/tangled, but it is cold outside. Should I have my pet groomed? Yes, most pets are strictly indoor pets. Which means that they are only outside for about 5 minutes at a time, they have a body temperature of 102, they will be fine. Or you may purchase a sweater for them if you wish.
When my pet walks it sounds like it is tapping on the floor, Why? Your pets nails need to be cut. Your pet can receive a nail cutting every week (WE DO NAIL TRIMMING FOR FREE). If a pet is making noise as it walks it may also be in pain, think of wearing a pair of shoes that are too small and your nails are too long. Some pets get very upset when you touch their feet, resist when it is time to go for a walk or walk around very slowly do to the possible pain.
My pets nails are beginning to bleed or are still bleeding after having nails cut, What do I do? Most times owners want the nails as short as possible. When we, as professionals, do this it may cause trickle bleeding. Depending on the excitement of the pet or the roughness of surface the pet walks on, the nails may bleed for a short time. You may either bring pet back to the person who cut them, apply baking soda to the bleeding nail with light pressure or let them walk in the dirt.
How can I help my pet to relax about its paws, face, and or tail? Take pet on a long walk, make sure pet is tired. Then when you get home, spend 5 minutes on each area that your pet gives you trouble with (or the groomer). This must be done each day in order for the pet to realize that it is OK to have these areas touched, brushed, massaged, etc..
What if I noticed a nick/cut on my pet after I got it home from the groomer? Call groomer immediately! They may not have noticed it. Most cases the groomer will pay for any vet bills associated with that area. Groomers do not nick/cut animals on purpose, accidents do happen. Not all pets are still all of the time, something may have startled the groomer or your pet. If the groomer tells you in advance, then they noticed it before you, and most likely have already gotten treatment for your pet also. Give the groomer another chance! Remember, we are here to help make pets look their best, not injure them.
What is clipper burn? Did my groomer cause it? Clipper burn is from a dull blade, pulling hair and then cutting it. Similar to us using a dull razor on legs or face, it will itch and we may make a rash from scratching it. The groomer did not cause it, the blade did. If this happens to your pet, PLEASE tell the groomer so that we may have the blade sharpened and no other pet will get a sore. We as groomers do not know that our blades are getting dull until it is too late.
What is a hot spot? This is a little irritation that flares up. Most times its a small area to begin with, then the pet chews or scratches it. Then that begins to itch, then the pet scratches or chews more. In comparison, it is like a mosquito bite that continues to itch and ends up like a carpet burn or road rash type of sore. As it heals it oozes, pets lick it to clean it. Then it scabs over to heal, which makes it itch, then the pet chews more. Just a vicious cycle. Ask your vet how to treat it. I use a Benadryl cream on my pet when this occurs and an e-collar so that my pet can not lick the site.
My Pet has fleas/ticks, what should I do? Take pet to your groomer. Fog or spray your house, yard and vehicle. Wait at least 4 hours to open house, then wait at least 1 hour till pets are allowed back inside of house. Apply a topical to pet for any lingering pests (I apply from base of tail to top of head. It distributes more evenly and is less likely to irritate pet and make them shake, which removes some of the topical). Ask your vet about giving something for the itching (flea/tick bites itch just like a mosquito bite itches to us). Depending on the severity of the infestation this process may need to be repeated weekly, due to the gestation period for these parasites (repeat 4x). Then repeated every other week (repeat 3x). Then repeated every 3rd week (repeat 2x). Then monthly as needed.
Do I need to use a topical flea/tick treatment on my pet? Yes, if you are having a pest problem. Not having a problem, do not use. I only use a topical on my pet if I see any fleas or ticks. I treat my house, yard and vehicle every month instead of my pet. Recent studies have shown that the topical we put on our pets start to dissolve acrylic nails, eats thru leather on a sofa, and in some cases it has left a burn mark on some pets. Besides, think back to childhood. Everyone had head lice at one time in their life, at that time we used a head lice shampoo. Do you still use it today as a preventative?
How often should I wash my pets toys and bedding? Every time your pet visits the groomer. Wash in hot water and use detergent laundry soap.
Do you tip the groomer? How much? Yes you can, The groomer is doing a service for you just like your hairstylist or barber does for you. The amount is up to you, general rule of thumb is 10% of total. Example, Groom is $30 then Tip is $3. Tipping is not required but appreciated.
Do you work all day? We offer daycare service at $10 per pet, per day. Your dog will get its own blanket, water dish and will go for a walk to stretch its legs. Your cat will get its own litter box, own water dish and own blanket. Either may have the chance to roam shop once all pets are gone.
How often should my pet see the vet? Every year for vaccines and a health check-up. Every dog should get a RABIES, BORDETELLA, and DISTEMPER. Every cat should get a RABIES and DISTEMPER. Even if your pet never goes outside, there is always a chance of escape.
What is the best kind of food for my pet? Over the years I have found out that most pets are allergic to soy, wheat, corn and dairy. But if you pet has no allergies then any pet food is OK for your pet. I feed my pet NUTRO'S Natural Choice, Lamb Meal & Rice. Remember to read the ingredient label, if it does not sound good to you, look it up (at the library-definitions of ingredients) and make sure it is good for your pet, warning: it may make you sick from reading it. Example: pig ears are sold at pet stores, they have a disclaimer that reads wash hands well after handling. If we should wash, why are we allowing our pets to chew in it or eat it. Visit http://www.nexusmagazine.com then put pet food in the search area and read the articles for more information. Warning: it may make you sick.
My pet is an elder... and has bad teeth... should I have a dental done on my pet? My opinion is; I would much rather have the chance to say good bye to my pet and try to make it healthier instead of coming home to a dead pet just because I did not keep up with its teeth.
I live in Pinellas County and would like to put my pet in a kennel when a hurricane comes...Is this safe? OK think about this, hurricane "Katrina" was a catagory 5.; If a catagory 5 was to hit Pinellas county it would be completley under water or wiped out. Does that sound safe to you? Make plans for pet to stay more inland, Orlando area or take pet with you. Evacuate on time and have a plan.
